Jenna’s Archive: Fanny Singer

When I walked into Fanny Singer’s Schindler designed apartment to shoot it for Architectural Digest, I felt like I’d already known her. Within minutes of meeting, we’d discussed art and tea (we’re both huge fans of Puerh) and favorite farmer’s market vendors and our mutual love of California produce, and her new pregnancy (that we needed to hide as she wasn’t announcing it yet).

While the apartment was quite small, the warmth and sense of home radiated from every perfectly imperfect detail. Her collections of books and art and textiles and utensils and bowls gave all the well lived goodness and filled this photographer’s heart with joy. Fanny just released her book “Always Home” this year, a combination cookbook and autobiography - it sits on my bedside desk and feels like coming home everytime I open it to read a chapter. There were knives and beautiful cookware and cutting boards from her company Permanent Collection and the kitchen was full of this week’s Hollywood Farmer’s Market haul.

At lunch, we sat for tea and she shared some dates with me from her mom’s restaurant Chez Panisse. We talked more of travel and the things we loved - I knew I’d met a friend. I think when I fall in love with a home I shoot, or I feel deeply connected to the homeowner, it shows in the photos. When I look at these, I remember this day and it fills me with all the beauty of moments where strangers become friends and the magic of this creative LA community I am fortunate enough to be a part of.
